Q. Please introduce Elice’s product.

KiYeon Elice possesses a diverse range of products encompassing education, assessment, and recruitment. Among these, our core platform, the Elice LXP (Learning eXperience Platform), is developed using various technologies. Moreover, as Elice’s business has expanded into cloud services, we now offer Runbox, which provides a GPU-based container environment. Through Runbox, we can provide various environments such as VS Code, Orange3, SSH, and more.

Elice is developing and enhancing a variety of platforms that provide education, assessment, and cloud services based on AI. These products are organically connected, offering a range of functionalities.

Q. Please introduce your current responsibilities.

WookJin I am developing various core features on the LXP, such as a video classroom, code editor, and Runbox, which facilitates conducting classes and practices on a GPU-based VM (Virtual Machine). Additionally, I am responsible for developing internal libraries, DevOps scripts, or development environments that can enhance the development experience, or DX (Digital Transformation), of team members.

YeChan I lead the mobile development team. I have participated in most of the sprint developments, working on everything from UI to core functionalities. Recently, I have been focusing on laying the foundation of the app, developing aspects such as the API Client, Account, and the Elice Design System.

Q. How does the development team operate?

WookJin We usually conduct our development in 3-week sprints. As the team has grown, we’ve started to run sprints in parallel.

YeChan In the mobile team, since sprints are less often the main product focus, we participate in multiple sprints simultaneously to support user learning. I believe what sets us apart from other teams is not just developing according to finalized plans and designs but also actively voicing our opinions and participating in the decision-making process.

Q. What sets Elice’s development team apart from other development teams?

KiYeon Our development team has a well-established environment where everyone can contribute ideas from the planning stage to the project launch.

Wookjin Given that Elice is a coding education platform, it’s crucial for developers to voice their opinions. From a development perspective, we conduct code reviews where necessary and engage in pair programming when it’s beneficial. We also hold seminars on topics like new libraries or development methodologies, and the valuable insights from these seminars are incorporated into our current and future projects.

Q. Can you share a moment when you felt you had grown through your work?

KiYeon

I’ve felt significant growth recently. In my first year, I was really not accustomed to coding, and even handling my own tasks felt overwhelmingly challenging. Now, even in situations where the scale has increased more than fivefold from before, I find myself actively identifying issues on my own, reporting them, and continuously playing a role where I can assist other team members. This has made me realize how much I’ve grown.

At Elice, we operate CPU and GPU server farms, and in case of requiring substantial computing resources, like machine learning, we offer development environments to individuals and companies in the form of SaaS (Software as a Service) through a service known as the Elice Project, currently operated as an MVP. I have been leading and developing this product overall. Despite being in MVP status, receiving feedback like “I’m using it very well.” or “Can I pay to get better resources?” through the customer support channel has been incredibly rewarding.

Elice has constructed its own PMDC (Portable Modular Data Center), a mobile modular data center, which is among the best in the country in terms of power efficiency. It provides cloud and AI development environments to various companies and institutions.

Q. Can you describe a moment when you felt particularly proud of your work?

WebRTC is a network protocol designed for real-time communication between peers through web browsers and mobile apps, fundamentally based on peer-to-peer (P2P) communication.

KiYeon There was a time when an institution used the test monitoring feature based on WebRTC to conduct a large-scale test with about ten thousand participants. Despite having released the feature without having conducted such a large-scale test before, I remember completing the project with numerous preliminary tests, performance optimizations, and performance improvements.

Yechan I feel proud as a developer when implementing new features. Whenever someone leaves a review saying they started studying coding because of the Elice app, it reassures me that I’m heading in the right direction and brings me great satisfaction.

Q. Is there a unique tech stack you can experience at Elice?

WookJin At Elice, due to the vast array of platform features, relying on a single app for operation imposes limitations on maintenance and additional feature development. Therefore, we are adopting Micro Service Architecture (MSA) for development. Additionally, as we develop multiple apps, we use a variety of development environments and build tools compared to other companies. To provide an educational environment not constrained by physical limitations, we develop and maintain online video classrooms, allowing us to explore the latest technologies such as WebRTC and WebAssembly. With these technologies, I personally aim to develop a platform where the entire process from user onboarding to learning, skills assessment, and even recruitment can be fully automated using AI.

Q. Who would you like to work with?

Yechan I hope to work with individuals who are assertive and not afraid to voice their opinions when they have valid reasons. I don’t necessarily seek someone with a strong stubbornness, but rather someone who isn’t afraid to express themselves with logical reasoning.

Transparency is the foundation of accountability, and I believe in openly sharing one’s thoughts, the status and results of tasks, and welcoming healthy feedback from colleagues.
